Education: Banning Bullying

Friday, August 8, 2008

In a recent article, the New York state senate introduced a bill banning bullying in public schools. The bill includes harassment based on sexual orientation.

"The legislation is an important recognition that gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender students are often harassed at school," Alan Van Capelle said, the executive director of the Empire State Pride Agenda, a gay-rights organization.

The legislation would require training for school staff to correctly put it in effect.

Training would include:
  • Helping teachers recognize bullying
  • Helping teachers respond to bullying
  • Requiring schools to keep track of bullying cases, especially sexual orientation harassment

Do you think Missouri needs to pass a bill such as this? Should a bill such as this extend to harassment of young girls?
Or do you think Columbia school children do not suffer from bullying to this extent that a bill would be needed?
Tell us your thoughts.

It's my impression that every state and perhaps the whole country needs legislation banning bullying, not just in schools, but also in workplaces. Like others I experienced some bullying in school, but not near as much as at work. Some employers not only allow employees to be bullied and injured on the job, but actually participate in the bullying and at to the harm done. One such employer is Trinity Health, headquartered in Novi, Michigan. I was an employee of a Trinity Health facility in Boise Idaho, and was daignosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) as a result of chronic bullying from a co-worker. I reported the bullying and the PTSD injury to management numerous times without ever receiving a response addressing the injury. However I was threatened with termination by tHe Employee Relations Manager from reporting the PTSD injury to hi. He also ordered me to lie about the PTSD injury if anyone asked, and ordered me to not talk about the injury with co-workers. Management tried to deny that there was problem and wanted me to participate in their denial by trying to censor any communication about the bullying and its injury-causing impact. This in spite of the fact that the diagnoses of PTSD wsw mand by a Trinity Health professional employee as occuring on the job at on of their medical centers! Eventually I had to quit, since I was being chronically injured on the job and gradually becoming disabled by the bullying. Legislation is needed to protect students and workers. Strong unions would also help to protect workers. I included informaiton about my experience on my blog at www.leonardnolt.blogspot.com on April 11 and will be adding more this month. The Healthy Workplaces Bill, currently being considerd by some states would be an excellent step toward stopping bullying in the workplace. Thank you.
